WMATA Andrews Federal Bus Garage
The Andrews Federal Center Bus Garage is a Design-Build project serving as a hub for WMATA Bus Operations and Maintenance Facilities. The facility is on a thirty five acre site situated in Prince George’s County, Maryland. The overall building design is coordinated with the operational goal of maintaining highly efficient servicing of the buses to minimize the impact on time and schedules. This program required coordination with design engineers for the disciplines of civil, architecture, structural, pre-cast concrete, mechanical, plumbing, electrical, lighting, systems and telecom, industrial equipment, fire protection, fuel storage, furnishings, LEED score certification, and code.
Iron Horse was responsible for the ADA review during the design phase and the FF&E. WMATA implemented a new furniture program for this project. Iron Horse continually updated the design, programming, and layout of the new program working between Hensel Phelps and WMATA to meet the clients needs, keep the project coordinated, and in budget. A sophisticated 3-D model was created to schedule the furniture and fixtures and coordinate with the engineering trades. The model was also used for ADA review especially in the maintenance facility to provide clear access for all the WMATA employees who work in the facility. This was a new application of VDC and was incredibly helpful in ensuring the equipment clearances prior to installation.
